Diane Middleton spent three decades in the classroom. Now she's running for the Horry County Board of Education — so every child in District 3 learns to read, grow, and reach their highest potential.
“As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher.”

Diane comes from a family of teachers. Her grandmother taught her father in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Maryland. Her mother became one of the first special education teachers in the state. For Diane, the classroom was always home.
She spent more than thirty years teaching elementary school — grades one through six in Fairfax County, Virginia, and in underserved communities in Washington, D.C. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland and a Master's in Education from Cambridge College, before becoming a reading specialist. In that role she found her deepest purpose: helping young students read at grade level and beyond, and watching early literacy change the course of a child's life.
Certified in creative writing, she published anthologies of her students' work. As a resource teacher she mentored fellow educators, led professional development, and helped shape curriculum — earning “Outstanding” evaluations and a seat on superintendent roundtables and textbook committees. One of her proudest accomplishments was helping launch and lead a successful K–3 public charter school that exceeded district benchmarks in parental involvement, attendance, school climate, curriculum, and achievement.
About ten years ago, Diane retired and moved to Horry County. But her passion never retired with her — and now she's stepping up to serve the community she calls home.
“I have a passion for education. I could talk about it all day. It's in my blood.”
“We have to have choices. If we only have one particular point of view, that's not America and that's not democracy. So I thought it was important for somebody to step up. It might as well be me.”
Today only one Democrat serves on the Horry County Schools board. Diane believes our students and families deserve more voices at the table — and adults who work together for every child.
A focused, student-first agenda grounded in three decades of classroom experience.
Keeping the district's focus where it belongs — on every single student learning and thriving, no matter their starting point.
Backing Superintendent Clifford Jones' #RiseWithReading campaign so every student reads at grade level and beyond.
Keeping students on the path to finishing strong — and walking across that stage ready for what comes next.
Modeling adults who get along — parents, teachers, students, and leaders working as one for the good of our young people.
Diane is committed to a clear, common-sense agenda for Horry County Schools, District 3 — putting students first and investing in strong public education.
Put the needs of all students at the center of every decision the board makes.
Maintain competitive teacher salaries to keep high-quality educators in our classrooms, paired with stringent professional standards.
Make sure each school is assigned the qualified faculty it needs to serve its whole student body.
Instead of private-school vouchers, promote all-day Pre-K for four-year-olds — building long-term academic success and helping lower child-care costs for families.
Support the Rise With Reading literacy initiative to reach a 95% literacy rate by 2030.
Increase the high school graduation rate so more students finish strong and ready for what comes next.
As a former reading specialist, Diane knows that learning to read is the single most important step in a child's education — and a healthy democracy depends on it.
“When you have a population that can't read the language they should be able to, that affects our entire society. The more people we have who are educated, the better all of us will be.”
Every student reading at — or above — their grade level by the time it matters most.
Catching reading gaps early, with the specialists and support our youngest learners need.
Championing a district-wide culture where reading is celebrated in every classroom and home.
District 3 is home to some of Horry County's fastest-growing neighborhoods. These are the schools, families, and students Diane is running to serve.
A growing community of young families and expanding schools.
The heart of the Grand Strand, where Diane has lived for a decade.
